What is a Mini-Split AC Unit?

Jun 18, 2019

Most people think of central air conditioning when discussing heating and cooling. What many people don’t know is that a unit known as a “mini-split” is actually an energy conserving alternative to a traditional AC unit!

Outdoor Mini-Split Air conditioning Unit also known as ductless air conditioning.

Most commonly found in multi-family housing, these units provide ductless air conditioning. They are best for cooling a specific area, such as a bedroom, or a small apartment. Mini-splits are also often used in home additions and on lanais. Many of our customers living in The Villages use mini-splits to keep their lanai’s temperature controlled throughout the year!

When it comes to the main components of the unit, mini-splits are similar to central units. These, like central units, have an indoor air handler and an outdoor condenser/compressor.

Advantages of a Ductless AC system

Mini-split systems require less installation time. They are a great option when it comes to flexibility on location of the air handler. Basically, you can have multiple air handlers in designated rooms/zones all connected to one outdoor unit. This means you can control the temperature in the areas needed at the time, and turn the others off. In turn, you save energy, which saves money!

According to the Department of Energy, duct losses can account for more than 30% of energy consumption for space conditioning! This is especially true if the ducts are in an unconditioned space such as an attic. Mini-split AC systems do not require ductwork, meaning the losses associated with air ducts are avoided.

Disadvantages of Ductless Air Conditioning

One big disadvantage of a mini-split system is the cost. We say this is a disadvantage because you are paying close to the same amount you would for central air, without the same cooling power as central air.

Another potential issue with this type of unit is location and size of air handlers. Yes, the location can be an advantage and a disadvantage. The disadvantage is this: an incorrectly placed, or sized, air handler can result in short cycling. This is when your unit turns on for short amount of time, then off for a short amount of time. This quick on and off wastes energy, resulting in wasted money!
